Set in France in 1654, Elomire-the leader of a renowned acting troupe, is being forced by the troupe patron Prince Conti to include in his troupe Valere, a foppish and vulgar street performer. Elomire desperately defends the integrity of her troupe and Prince Conti vociferously defends his decision to include the vain Valere. Elomire is forced to stage Valere’s absurd play, but holds out hope the Prince will see what a disaster Valere would be for her troupe. But Elomire, unable to compromise her artistic principles, strikes out on her own.
